Does Fiverr Offer a Realistic Marketing Resource for Small Business Owners?

Fiverr.com is an online marketplace where creative freelancers tout a wide range of digital products and services with an unbelievably low price point of just five US dollars.

At first glance, most of the listings appear to be of the novelty variety. There is also a hell of a lot of junk on there. But hidden amongst the $5 personal video Christmas greetings and ugly ebook cover design services, there might just be some gems that real world businesses can exploit.

Important: I often remind my clients that there is no such thing as cheap (or expensive) marketing. There is only marketing that works and marketing that doesn’t work. In this respect, a $5 service that yields no results may actually be quite expensive.

The $5 Prototype

Sometimes marketers need to test the water before going to market (or even their boss). Perhaps they need to prove a concept or design a prototype to attract investment or buy-in from their colleagues. It is here where I see services like Fiverr really working for small business marketers.

You might need a logo or a flyer designing for an in-house promotion, event or presentation, a short demonstration video introducing a product or service, or perhaps a piece of sample content that goes beyond the usual “Lorem Ipsum” filler to complete a wireframe design. In situations like this, a service like Fiverr becomes a very real solution and will certainly take the pressure off your in-house creative and marketing teams.

If your budget is really tight, Fiverr might even offer a solution that a small business owner could go to market with. This will be especially useful for micro-businesses that in the past have had to rely on “homebrewed” marketing solutions.

So What Do You Get For Your Five Bucks?

We’ll I thought I would have a bit of fun and employ a Fiverr freelancer to record a short video promoting my book: Becoming THE Expert: Enhancing Your Business Reputation through Thought Leadership Marketing to demonstrate the service.

This is perhaps the nearest thing I will ever get to celebrity endorsement – so enjoy.

OK, that probably wasn’t what you were expecting and I doubt the amazing Dr. Puppet’s hastily written rap will sell many books. But it certainly demonstrates the quality of performance available on Fiverr (I spent more on coffee while writing the lyrics than I did on the entire video).
